From the Manufacturer
The stage-ready POD® X3 Live represents the true evolution of the now-classic POD® xt Live guitar amp modeler, with an expanded array of 78 guitar amps, from high-wattage heavyweights to boutique beauties and vintage treasures.

Guitar amp models are just the beginning: With 24 guitar cabs, 98 stompbox and studio effects, 28 bass amps, 22 bass cabs and six vocal preamps - POD X3 Live comes complete with the all-around sonic firepower of a top-tier major-label studio, ready to tackle guitar, bass vocals and beyond. What's more, its larger LCD and smart new editing workflow pages make it easier than ever to find, tweak and save tones.

POD X3 Live also offers powerful new dual tone modeling and routing options. Split your single-input guitar or bass signal through two different amp and effect chains simultaneously to create gorgeous new hybrids, or use its dual inputs to individually process two instruments—a microphone and a guitar, for example—at the same time.

Computer recording enthusiasts will want to exploit the USB 2.0 connectivity provided by POD X3 Live for multi-channel recording as well as its S/PDIF Stereo Digital Audio Output for sending an ultra-clean signal to their DAW.

In addition to stereo 1/4-inch line outputs (with Amp/Line pad switch) POD X3 Live boasts stereo XLR balanced line outputs for the best possible live signal. When you hit the stage with the sleek, rugged brushed-aluminum POD X3 Live (with its racecar-inspired built-in expression pedal), you'll be outfitted with even more of the flexibility and timeless tones that have made POD the global standard for the discriminating guitarist.

Amps/Cabs: From Boutique Beauties to Screaming Monsters
Quite simply, there has never been an amp modeler with this much sheer firepower. The awesome amp arsenal in POD X3 Live boasts a whopping 78 guitar amps and 24 guitar cabinets (along with 28 bass amp models and 22 bass cabinet models). With the brilliant new Dual Tone processing provided by POD X3 Live, you can double your trouble by running through two amp rigs simultaneously, pairing any of the rumbling amp models provided by POD X3 Live for new and adventurous hybrids. And of course, Line 6 uses A.I.R.™ II microphone modeling to give you four mic options (with control of mic positioning and room bleed) for every single cab.

Effects: THe Most Mamoth COllection of Tones and Timbres Ever Assembled
Try to picture this: a pedal board that's 30-feet long, with close to a hundred of the all-time greatest stompboxes (in pristine condition!), along with an effects rack that houses top-notch outboard compressors, reverbs, EQs and vintage preamps. And imagine that you could play and record through this über-board with no noise at all, only one power supply and only a handful of knobs and switches to control the entire thing. Now imagine that it's a svelte, sleek and shiny brushed-aluminum killer that looks awesome with your onstage rig. That's what you get with POD® X3 Live: up to nine simultaneous effects, and the most mammoth collection of tones and timbres ever assembled. With POD X3 Dual Tone processing, you can even run through two completely independent effects chains at the same time, to create totally original (and insane!) walls of sound. While its heavy-duty metal footswitches allow you to select presets and individual effect modules, the stylish and rugged POD X3 Live foot controller can be used to control wah, volume or to morph between effect settings. You can even integrate your collection of outboard rack and stompbox effects with POD X3 Live via its 1/4-inch stereo effects loop. POD X3 Live includes:

  • Stomp: Fuzz, Distortion, Overdrive and every flavor of delicious dirt.
  • Mod: Chorus, Flanger, Tremolo, Rotary, Phaser; some serious swoosh.
  • Delay: Multiple types of Analog, Digital, Tape and other echoes, echoes, echoes. . .
  • Reverb: Multiple types of Room, Hall, Chamber, Plate, Spring and more.
  • Beyond: Compressors, Gate, 4-Band Semi-Parametric EQ, Guitar Synth, Filters, Wah and the entire galaxy of otherworldly timbre tweakers.

Bass and Vocals: The Ultimate Secret Weapon for Bassists, Singers, and Songwriters
Think POD is only geared towards guitarists? Think again: POD® X3 Live might just be the ultimate secret weapon for bassists, singers and songwriters too. Bass players can combine any of the 28 badass bass amp and 22 bass cab models in POD X3 with any one of its killer studio-grade mic preamps, high-end compressors and super-cool stompboxes. Better yet, why not use Dual Tone processing to run up to nine of those stompboxes and studio processors on each of your two simultaneous bass rigs . . . in stereo! Now that's lowdown and dirty. . .

Singers can run their studio microphone into the XLR input on the POD X3 Live and take advantage of its warm and rich suite of mic preamps. Adding a touch of top-quality vintage spring or digital reverb will put that professional touch on all your best songs.

Perform live using POD X3 Dual Tone processing to turn your POD X3 Live into both a vocal processor/preamp and a guitar amp modeler/effector, and simply send a single stereo pair to the house as you sing and play your sensitive heart out! While you're at it, why not a route a drum machine or sampler to the Auxiliary input for a little backing beat?

5 out of 5 stars Love this magic box   May 13, 2010

I love my Line 6 POD X3 Live Guitar Multi Effects Pedal. With this modern marvel, you should be able to achieve just about any tone you can imagine (the Line 6 website explains its capabilities in detail). With a little experimentation, you should be able to easily find your own unique tone.

After a brief tutorial, and a few minutes with the included manual, it was easy for me to dial through the hundreds of amazing presets. While this device is quite easy to use right out of the box, it might take years to discover all of its capabilities. Mostly I am using the POD X3 Live to replace my existing effects pedals (distortion, chorus, flanger, delay, wah) for use with my Stratocaster. I doubt if I will ever use those pedals again. I am using the device plugged directly into the guitar input on my amplifier; it sounds great.

I also appreciate the built-in tuner (which mutes while tuning, of course), the headphone jack, the microphone input, and the USB output (to use your computer for recording and mixing). Another great feature, is its ability for separate tone processing of the guitar and microphone (vocal) inputs.

I would really love to have a comprehensive instructional DVD that explains how to setup the various "stomps" and "mods." The manufacturer (Line 6) does have many instructional videos posted on their channel on a popular video website; but it would be nice to have select instructional videos (on a DVD) shipped with the product.

5 out of 5 stars One rig to another totally different one in a STOMP!   April 12, 2009

This is an updated review of the POD X3 Live.
I'll start by saying that the POD X3 Live is very versatile, and with the included Gearbox tweaks and patch creation is a breeze. Everyone will have their own kind of setup connection, I have mine wired with the live out going through to a powered PA and the direct going to a PC recording interface, a setup which I found works best for me.

Although you can switch the output level for direct or amp setting which affects the live output, I just couldn't find a sweet spot for my amp (a half stack SLX-900 with 6l6 power tubes). If I chose to run it through the amp I would have to use the effects loop (if anyone has advise for me on any other way to connect the POD to the amp it would be very much appreciated). However, I'd rather use the amp dry or with minimum setup of stomp boxes.

With two effects "channels" for each preset location you get great flexibility, mixing and matching of the sounds for the song application and gradual fade in by flipping the volume for each preset for volume pedal.

The unit works great with Cubase, Adobe Audition and more importantly RiffWorks. With a full license of RiffWorks you get a great recording tool which is riff based, layer upon layer of riffs (I think up to 48) which is a simple yet effective way to lay dawn a song tracks. One drawback is the drumming tool Instant Drummer, it is just kind of linear and with very limited (or no) room for modification. You are limited by the styles and beats available for purchase, so you will not be able to create your own drum lines.

With GuitarPort you get a great learning tool with lessons, accurate tabs and backing tracks (with or without rhythm/ lead/ bass) along with each tone.
In summary:

The unit is AWESOME!

Pros:
- Great amp/cab stomp box modeler, amazing tones.
- Hardware controls on the POD give you immediate control over the some parameters (drive/treble/mid etc.). Clear big screen easy to read and edit parameters.
- Versatile inputs on the back of the unit. Should accommodate most applications, Need to Jam? plug an MP3 and you're ready to go. If you are a vocalist plug in a mic and use very good mic pre amps. Usfull to mic an acoustic guitar also
- Great product support/dedication, constant updates and tweaks from Line6.
- A lot of great thing that will be too much to list.

Cons:
- Some presets are utterly useless, not a major draw back.
- Just can't get it to work for my amp through the front input as stated in the manual.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic if you use it with the right equipment!   April 20, 2010

If you try to use this with an amp, it will not sound like it should. I've had mine for 6 months and have searched for something to make it sound like it does in the headphones. I've tried 3 different amps, yes plugging into the aux or return and a pair of monitors. The monitors sounded great, but mine were only 5" so they lacked a little depth for me especially on heavy distortion or drop D. I bought a Fender Passport 150 and it sounds great with the X3. I also use a Line 6 Variax and I can now go from Acoustic, sitar, Drop D Distortion, many more and they all sound fantastic! Again the X3 is fantastic, but only if you use it like it was meant to be(Live through a PA). I give it 5 stars! If it were stolen I would buy another.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome   May 6, 2009

I feel like I own every guitar amp ever made. It truly does imitate amps very well. It is a bit overwhelming to jump into the learning curve, but youtube videos were very helpful. I have yet to find a way to make my electric guitar sound like an acoustic, which is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to eliminate one guitar to my act. I believe it is the best effects pedal made. Maybe I haven't learned how to make it work correctly, but when I switch from A bank to D, then back to A, I am no longer on the preset that I had set up when I went to D. The manual that came with it was version A, and D is the current, so I had to print a 90 something page manual. But, I love it over all. I'm walking out the door to practice with it now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Pedals Out there   June 5, 2010
Wise Teacher (Iowa, USA)
I bought this pedal last year and so far Its being nothing but pleasure. I've been playing the guitar for over 20 years and I've been using pedals, effects and stomp-boxes for about 15. Although this amazing piece of equipment will never replace the old original boxes and pedals, it will still model a tremendous amount of effects, amps, pedals etc., surely more than I can take.
I am not very hard on it as far as jumping on it or pushing the stomp-boxes extremely hard, therefore the POD X3 live seems to me to be pretty resistant and sturdy although the stomp-box switches are made out of chromed plastic and I imagine that if pushed hard enough they may break.
My favorite feature is the software interface. I plug it to my laptop before concerts and I can set up every thing I need (sounds, effects, patches, amps, etc.) right on the laptop's screen (through the GearBox interface software, which I downloaded for free from the Line6 web site)without having to bend over all the time to tweak the POD's little screen.
Another favorite feature is the ability to separate the signal to my Amp frome the signal to the house or to the recording mixer. I can tweak the signal to my amp without making the sound system guys mad.
It would be difficult to list all of the amazing features packed in the Line6 POD X3 live but I've already tried it for a year and I'm convinced this is one of the best pedals out there.
